Eco-travelers, we've got your next destination: Masdar City.
Located within a 2.3-square-mile section of Abu Dhabi, it was established in 2008 with the goal of becoming the world’s most sustainable eco-city, a planned, urban community aiming to achieve the lowest possible carbon emissions.
Honeywell, which has been in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) since the 1970s, is establishing a new high-tech office complex in the city that complements and consolidates its presence in Abu Dhabi. The new building features cost-effective and energy-efficient Honeywell technology such as Solstice® Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA). Solstice LBA is used in spray foam to insulate, seal and improve structural strength in commercial and residential buildings. It was used to insulate the entire roof.
Solstice LBA has already been adopted globally by more than three dozen companies in rigid foam applications such as spray foam, appliance and panel insulation, as well as flexible foam applications such as integral skin. Widespread adoption of Solstice LBA would save about 60 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, comparable to eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from more than 11.8 million cars. This next-generation product is non-ozone-depleting and has the same global warming potential as naturally occurring carbon dioxide, thus meeting the stringent environmental and building regulations set by Abu Dhabi.
Most importantly, with Solstice LBA, the Honeywell building is able to meet Masdar City’s requirement of 40 percent energy savings for new buildings. This requirement was designed to address the high power consumption needed to run things like computers and air conditioning systems in a climate as hot as the UAE’s.
Masdar City was designed to be aligned with the UAE’s Vision 2021, a program focused on tackling climate change, and developing environmentally friendly and sustainable buildings. Many of those buildings combine traditional Arab architecture with modern technology to significantly reduce water and energy consumption.
The city is currently undergoing the most rapid development in its history, with agreements that will produce 200,000 square meters of new buildings such as schools, offices, hotels, shops, restaurants and residences every year for the next five years.
